What’s Your Risk for Glaucoma?

What’s Your Risk for Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the United States. In 2014 the AOA (American Optometric Association) conducted a survey, American Eye-Q, and the findings about Americans’ knowledge of eye health relating to glaucoma were alarming. 1 in 5 respondents didn’t know at what age glaucoma is most often detected and only 13 percent of respondents knew that race affects the risk of developing glaucoma.

Here a few fast facts about glaucoma you need to now:

– More than 2.2 million Americans have glaucoma but only about half know they have it.

– 120,000 people are estimated to have been blinded by glaucoma, accounting for 9 to 12 percent of all cases of blindness in the US.

– African Americans are fifteen times more likely to be visually impaired from glaucoma.

– Patients older than 60 years of age are 6 times more likely to get glaucoma.

– Family history increases risk of glaucoma 4 to 9 times.

If you fall into any of these risk categories, especially if you have a family history of glaucoma, make an appointment to come see us. Dr. A or Dr. Doan can help you focus on preventative measures – and establish your risk for developing glaucoma.
