Eye2Eye is proud to be one of the first eye care providers in the area to offer macular pigment testing for our patients. Macular pigment testing helps to establish a baseline to help determine risk and manage the potential for macular degeneration.
One question our doctors at eye2eye receive all the time is: What can I do to prevent macular degeneration? Our patients have seen firsthand the debilitating effects of this disease in family members or friends, and want to do everything they can to prevent the disease for themselves and their families.
Scientists have been hard at work researching the macula area of the eye to greater develop their knowledge of how the macula works and how macular degeneration progresses.
Technology is now available to screen patients for the amount of pigment each person has in his or her eye. Measuring the amount of pigment in the eye allows the doctor and the patient to establish a baseline and develop a strategy to help maintain vision and health, before changes start to appear clinically.
The pigment amounts can accurately and consistently be tracked so patients can see first hand if their pigment is changing. The equipment used to test for macular pigment is called a densitometer. It works by simply showing the patient a series of mildly flashing lights in their central and peripheral visual areas. Measurements are taken while the test occurs and by comparing the two measurements, it can determined how much light is absorbed by the macular pigment and therefore how much macular pigment a patient has. The underlying principal is called heterochromatic flicker photometry.
We encourage our patients to view some of the published research articles about macula pigment, past vitamin therapies that are no longer deemed effective, and current data that supports which vitamin supplements work best.
Stay tune to our blog as well will continue to cover important information regarding macular degeneration prevention and testing, including blue light protection and vitamin therapies.

Every Tuesday on the blog will now be Tech Tuesday! There are so many new and emerging lens technologies available now that help treat a wide range of vision problems and we want to be a resource for information on those technologies. Each week we will highlight a different lens technology that we offer here at eye2eye – you can look forward to learning a lot about lenses and which ones may be right for you! Now, on to this week’s installment of Tech Tuesdays!
This week we are highlighting Varilux S Series lenses. Varilux S Series lenses are progressive lenses. They provide limitless vision and offer a performance guarantee. There are two components of Varilux lenses that make the S Series lenses go above and beyond typical progressive lenses, Nanopitx and SynchronEyes.
The Nanopitx feature of Varilux S Series lenses ensures stability in motion effectively eliminating the “swim effect” many progressive lens wears experience. The “swim effect” is feeling off-balance when walking down stairs or when your environment is moving.
SynchronEyes technology is a revolution in lens design that ensures expansive vision in progressive lens wearers. Often times progressive wearers complain about a limited field of vision. SynchronEyes technology allows both the right and left lenses to work together as one visual system to ensure an expansive field of vision and edge-to-edge clarity.
If you are a progressive lens wearer and find yourself experiencing the swim effect or a limited field of vision, make an appointment to have your lenses evaluated and we will discuss your options for switching to Varilux lenses! You will certainly see and feel the difference.

Here are 5 important things to consider when purchasing sunglasses for your children:
1. Be sure the lenses are impact resistant & the frames made of “unbreakable” material.
2. Pick a large, close-fitting frame. These are best to help protect children’s eyes during play.
3. It is most important that your child wear sunglasses between 10am-2pm, when the suns rays are the strongest.
4. Beware of cheap sunglasses. They can pose safety hazards when made of cheap materials and low quality paints.
5. Know the percentage of UVA & UVB rays being block by the sun – be wary of the phrase “blocks UV rays”. You want a lens that blocks out 100% of UVA & UVB rays.
All of the sunglasses available at eye2eye meet all five of our recommend buying guidelines. Bring your little one in and let’s get them fitted for fun summer sunglasses.
