What is Keratoconus?
It is estimated that one in every 2,000 Americans will develop keratoconus, an eye condition that can cause serious long-term consequences on your vision. If you or a loved one are suffering from keratoconus, keep reading to learn more about this eye condition from the team at Eye2Eye Optometry.
What is Keratoconus?
Before we begin, let’s explain what keratoconus is first. Keratoconus is an eye condition that happens when your cornea thins and then bulges outward into a cone-like shape. A typical cornea is supposed to be clear and dome-shaped on the surface of your eye, but keratoconus causes the shape of the cornea to resemble a cone-like surface. This can have major impacts on your vision, including blurry vision and sensitivity to light.
What are the symptoms of Keratoconus?
Individuals who are experiencing keratoconus may start to notice symptoms as early as age 10. The eye disorder can progress over time and become more noticeable by a patient’s late 20s. Here are some common symptoms associated with keratoconus:
-
Blurred vision
-
Sensitivity to bright lights or glare
-
Eye redness or swelling
-
Difficulty driving at night
-
Frequently changing eyeglass prescriptions
-
Clouding of vision that sets in quickly
What Causes Keratoconus?
The cause of keratoconus is unknown, but scientists have discovered some similar patterns over the years that may be the culprit. For example, one in 10 patients who are diagnosed with keratoconus has a parent who shares the condition. Other risk factors include those who rub their eyes vigorously or people who experience eye allergies. Other issues like chronic eye inflammation have been linked to keratoconus. When your eyes are inflamed from allergies or environmental irritants, your cornea tissue can become damaged, resulting in keratoconus.
How to Treat Keratoconus
The only way to properly diagnose keratoconus is through a comprehensive eye exam. An optometrist will measure the curvature of your cornea and perform a few tests to determine if you have keratoconus. If you are diagnosed, your vision can be corrected early by wearing eyeglasses. Over time, you may need to switch to a special custom-fit contact lens for patients with keratoconus. Keratoconus is typically diagnosed during a patient’s late teen to early twenties, so when caught early enough, younger patients may be able to avoid surgical intervention. Schedule a comprehensive eye exam at Eye2Eye Optometry to discuss your treatment options.
