6 Signs of Dry Eye Syndrome

Have you experienced a change in the appearance or feeling of your eyes during the colder months? Dry eye syndrome, a common eye disorder that affects millions of Americans, regularly flares up in the winter months. In order to properly diagnose dry eye syndrome, you should consult an eye care professional. However, there are tell-tale signs that you may be experiencing dry eyes. Keep reading to learn more from the team at Eye2Eye Optometry.

What are dry eyes?

Before we begin, let’s explain what is dry eye syndrome. Dry eye occurs when tear production decreases or becomes abnormal in the eye. Tears allow your eyes to remain lubricated throughout the day while offering an additional layer of protection. When that lubrication decreases or becomes inconsistent, your eyes can become dry and irritated. Also, if your eyes do not produce tears at a consistent rate, you may produce an excessive amount of tears to lubricate them.

Signs of dry eye syndrome

Now that you have a better understanding of what dry eye is, here are six common signs that you may be experiencing this eye disorder:

  1. Burning sensation

  2. Stinging or painful sensation

  3. Sensitivity to light

  4. Blurry or changed vision

  5. Discharge or mucus that comes out of your eye or eyes

  6. Watery eyes or excessive tearing

How do you develop dry eyes?

There are multiple causes that can lead patients to experience dry eye syndrome. Some of the most common factors include:

  • Environmental: Colder or dry weather can contribute to dry eye symptoms.

  • Lifestyle: Contact lens use or spending too much time looking at screens.

  • Smoking: Cigarette smoke can irritate the eyes, causing dry eye symptoms.

  • Diet: Not incorporating enough leafy greens or omega-3 fatty acids into your diet.

Treatment Options

Luckily, there are several treatment options available to help combat dry eye syndrome.

  • iLux Treatments: This non-surgical solution for dry eye softens blockages in the meibomian glands with heat and compression.

  • IPL Therapy: Intense Pulsed Light, or IPL therapy, seals abnormal blood vessels that can leak inflammatory mediators into your eyes.
