10 Tips to Maintain Eye Health

As we spring forward into the warmer seasons, have you thought about how to protect your eyes to maintain optimal health? The team at Eye2Eye is sharing 10 helpful tips to maintain eye health this spring season and beyond. Keep reading to learn more!

Eat Well

Healthy eyes start with a healthy diet, which means you should be eating balanced and nutrient-dense foods to protect your eye health. Try to incorporate more leafy greens and healthy omega-3 foods into your diet for optimal eyesight health.

Hand Hygiene

Always be sure to protect your eyes from things that your hands have touched–dirty phones, keyboards, steering wheel etc.  You can do this by frequently washing your hands with warm water and antibacterial soap. Try to avoid touching your eyes and face with your hands, which can harbor harmful bacteria throughout the day.

Use Safety Eyewear

If you live an active lifestyle or spend a great deal of time outdoors, be sure to wear the proper eyewear, even as simple as sunglasses, so you do not damage your eyes.Trimming shrubs, cutting the grass, or pulling weeds places your eyes in near proximity to flying debris that you can’t control  Many eye injuries can be easily prevented just by wearing proper safety eyewear.

Digital Eye Breaks

If you work or go to school, chances are that you spend a great deal of time in front of a computer screen. Or maybe you like to stream movies and spend time on your smartphone. Too much exposure to screens can damage your eyes over time, sometimes resulting in uncomfortable eye disorders like dry eye syndrome. Give your eyes a break this spring by heading more outdoors to enjoy the increased sunshine.

Wear Sun Protection

As we spend more time outdoors in the warmer months, it's important to remember to wear proper sun protection for your eyes. Remember to wear sunglasses that protect your eyes from UVA and UVB rays, whose powerful rays can potentially damage your eyes.

Stop Smoking

Studies have shown that smokers are more likely to develop cataracts earlier and are a higher risk for macular degeneration, an irreversible vision loss that happens gradually over time. Smoking paired with exposure to UV or poor diet, makes vision changes even more likely.

Try Supplements

A great way to maintain eye health is to incorporate supplements into your daily routine. Schedule a comprehensive eye exam and our doctors will  discuss which eye health supplements may be right for you. Or browse our selection online here

Update Your Eye Prescription

If you wear contact lenses or glasses, get your eyes checked each year to make sure your eye prescription is up-to-date and that your eyes are focusing properly and are balanced for the daily activities that you use them for (computer, driving, sports etc)
